What a domain does for trust
Your domain name is your store's address, like yourbrand.in. A free subdomain works for testing. But a real domain tells buyers you are serious and here to stay. It looks better on a parcel, an Instagram bio and a WhatsApp message. It also belongs to you. If you ever change platforms, your address and the traffic it brings come with you.
.in vs .com for an Indian audience
If you sell mostly in India, a .in domain is a strong choice. It tells buyers you are local, which helps when they decide whether to trust a new store with a UPI payment. Shopify's naming guide notes that country domains signal to search engines which country a site targets. The Indian clothing brand Suta, for example, uses .in rather than .com. A .com suits you if you plan to sell abroad soon, or if the .com of your name is free.
.in vs .com at a glance
| Factor | .in | .com |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Buyers in India | Buyers in India and abroad |
| Availability | Worth checking when the .com is taken | Most short names already registered |
| Perception | A local, Indian brand | The familiar global default |
| Best for | A store that ships within India | A brand planning to sell overseas |
Rules for a good store name
Keep it short. Shopify's guide suggests under 15 characters, because short names are easier to spell and share out loud. Skip hyphens and numbers, since people mistype them. Say the name once over the phone. If the listener cannot type it, change it. Avoid names tied to one product, like cottonkurtas.in, if you might add sarees later. And steer clear of any name close to a known brand, which can bring a legal notice.
Check availability everywhere at once
Before you pay for a domain, check the name in four places on the same day. Search a domain registrar for both .in and .com. Check the handle on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Search the trademark register to see if someone already owns the name in your category. Then search Google and the marketplaces for stores with the same or a similar name. If any one is taken, pick another name now. Changing later is far more painful.
Connect it and renew it
Buy the domain in your own name, with an email you will always have access to. Your store builder will give you a few DNS records to add at your registrar. DNS is the setting that points your domain to your store, and changes can take some hours to work. Then turn on auto-renew and keep a working card on file. A lapsed domain can be bought by someone else, and your store link goes dead overnight.
Pick a name, then build
Once the name is locked, the rest is quick. On The Storemate you can launch on a free subdomain today and connect your own domain when it is ready, so you never wait on one to start the other. Your name will likely outlive your first theme, your first products and maybe your first platform. Give it one calm evening, not five rushed minutes.
