What you need before you start
Get four things ready before you open any builder. First, a short list of products you can ship reliably - five to ten is plenty. Second, clear photos of each one on a plain background. Third, your prices, with GST worked in if you are registered. Fourth, a bank account for payouts, plus your PAN and business details for the payment gateway. With these ready, the build goes fast. Without them, you stall halfway and lose a weekend.
Pick a builder that fits India
A store builder is a hosted tool that gives you a theme, a product editor and a checkout. You fill in forms and it writes the code. Even Shopify's own guide says a store without coding skills starts on a platform like this. For an Indian store, check three things before you sign up. Does UPI work well at checkout? Can you offer cash on delivery with rules by pincode? Are prices in rupees, with GST invoices built in? A builder that fails any of these will cost you paid apps later.
Add products that sell
Each product page has one job: answer a buyer's questions before they ask. Write a plain title that says what it is. Add four or five photos, including one that shows the size in a hand or on a person. Write a short description with material, size, care and what is in the box. Set your price, stock count and weight, because weight drives shipping cost. Then group products into two or three collections so buyers can browse.
Turn on payments and shipping
Payments come first. Connect a gateway so buyers can pay by UPI, cards and netbanking, and switch on cash on delivery. In smaller cities, COD can be more than half your orders, so keep it on but set limits. Many sellers block COD above a cart value or for pincodes with high returns. Then set shipping. Start simple, with one flat rate or free shipping above a cart value. You can add zones and weight-based rates once orders come in.
Set up the pages buyers look for
Buyers check a few pages before they trust a new store. You need a return and refund policy, a shipping policy, privacy and terms pages, and a contact page with a real phone number or email. Add a short About page that says who you are and where you ship from. These pages take an hour to write. They also remove a big reason people leave without buying.
Launch and test a real order
Before you share the link, buy from yourself. Place one order by UPI and one on cash on delivery. Check that the confirmation email arrives, the invoice looks right and the order shows up in your admin. Then cancel and refund it. Open the store on your phone too, since that is where many buyers will see it. Fix anything that feels slow or unclear. Only then tell people you are open.
The build sequence, step by step
- Pick five to ten products and shoot clear photos of each one.
- Sign up for a store builder and choose a mobile-friendly theme.
- Add each product with a title, photos, price, stock and weight.
- Connect a payment gateway and turn on UPI, cards and COD.
- Set a flat shipping rate or a free-shipping threshold.
- Publish your return, shipping, privacy, terms and contact pages.
- Place a test order, check the invoice, then refund it.
- Share your store link on WhatsApp and Instagram.
Keep the first version small
Your first version does not need a blog, a loyalty scheme or twenty collections. It needs products, a working checkout and pages that build trust. Launch that, watch what buyers do, then add more. If you want a builder made for India, The Storemate has UPI, COD rules by pincode and GST invoices built in, and you can start on a free plan.
