The easiest sale is to a buyer already buying

Someone with your product in their cart is your warmest possible buyer. Getting them to add one more item, or pick a better version, is the cheapest revenue there is. That's upselling and cross-selling. Done well, it feels helpful. Done badly, it feels pushy. Here's how to get it right.

Upsell vs cross-sell, quickly

An upsell offers a better or bigger version of what they're buying — the larger pack, the premium model. A cross-sell offers something that goes with it — the case for the phone, the polish for the shoes. Both lift the order value. Both work best when the suggestion genuinely helps.

Suggest what actually goes together

A good recommendation is relevant, not random. If it doesn't obviously pair with what they're buying, it's noise that clutters the page. Think like a helpful shopkeeper: what would this buyer genuinely find useful next? Relevance is what turns a suggestion into a sale.

Place it where it helps, not where it nags

Put suggestions where they add to the decision — a "goes well with" block on the product page, or a small add-on at the cart. Don't block the path to checkout with pop-ups. The buyer should feel helped toward more, never trapped or nagged into it.

Use bundles to make it easy

A bundle does the cross-sell for the buyer. Package items that go together at a slight saving, and many will take the easy, better-value option. Bundles lift average order value and clear complementary stock, while feeling like a deal rather than an upsell.

Don't overdo it

More suggestions isn't more sales. A page crammed with "you may also like" everything just overwhelms and slows the buyer down. Pick a few genuinely relevant items. Restraint keeps the page clean and the recommendation trusted, which is what actually drives the extra order.

Where your store helps

The Storemate helps here with product recommendations — related items, frequently-bought-together, and recently-viewed — plus bundles you can build yourself. Show the right add-on at the right moment, and lift your average order value from buyers who are already saying yes.
