The real monthly cost of Shopify apps

Shopify's plan is the floor, not the ceiling. Paid apps for reviews, email, loyalty and GST stack up every month. Here's how app costs add up — and how to keep them in check.

The plan is the floor, not the ceiling

Shopify's monthly plan is only your starting cost. Much of what a store needs — reviews, advanced email, upsells, GST invoices in India — lives in paid apps. Each looks cheap alone. Together they can quietly double your monthly software bill. Here's how to see the real number before it surprises you.

Why so much lives in apps

Shopify keeps its core lean and leans on a huge app store. That's a strength for choice and a cost for your wallet. Features that feel basic — a proper review widget, a loyalty program, GST-correct invoices — are often third-party apps, each with its own monthly fee.

How the small fees stack

An email app here, a reviews app there, an upsell app, a GST app. Say each is a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees a month. Four or five of them, and you've added more than your base plan — every month, whether or not sales grow.

Watch for usage-based pricing

Some apps charge by email sent, order volume, or SMS. That scales with success, which is fair, but it means your bill rises exactly when you're busiest. Read whether an app is flat or usage-based before you install it, so a good month doesn't bring a shock invoice.

Audit your apps every quarter

Apps pile up and get forgotten. Once a quarter, list every app and its monthly cost, and ask what each one earns. Uninstall the ones you don't use. Merge overlapping ones. This single habit often cuts a store's app bill by a third.

Prefer built-in over bolt-on

Every app is another login, another bill, and another thing that can break during an update. Where a platform includes a feature natively, that's one less app to pay for and babysit. Fewer moving parts is cheaper in money and in time.

Where an all-in-one changes the maths

The Storemate includes GST invoicing, email sequences, a page builder, themes, and analytics in the plan — features you'd often add as paid apps elsewhere. Fewer apps means fewer monthly line items and less to maintain, so more of your revenue stays yours instead of going to a stack of subscriptions.
