What free listings are
Free listings are product results Google shows without charging you per click. Your product can appear with its photo and price on Google Search, the Shopping tab, Google Images and YouTube. For a new store with no ad budget, that is real shelf space. Google turns the feature on by default in most accounts, but it does not promise your products will show. Google matches your product data with what buyers search for. So the quality of that data decides how often you appear, and that part is in your hands.
Before you start
Google checks your store before it checks your products. Put clear contact details on your site, such as an email, phone number or contact form. Publish a return policy that is easy to find. Make sure checkout collects card details on a secure page and offers at least one normal payment method. Google lists payment on delivery as one of those methods, so a COD store can qualify. Fix these first. It is faster than waiting for a rejection and fixing them then.
Setup, step by step
- Put contact details, a return policy and a secure checkout on your site.
- Create a Merchant Center account and add your business details.
- Verify and claim your website.
- Set up shipping, which Google requires for India.
- Add your products with accurate prices, photos and availability.
- Check the Free listings page and fix any product issues.
Create the account and verify the site
When you sign up, Google asks about your business and where you sell. Then you verify and claim your website. Verifying proves you own it. Claiming links that address to your Merchant Center account. You can verify with an email code, an HTML tag or file, Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics or your store platform's own option. Sometimes Google verifies it for you.
Add your product feed
Your product feed is the list of products Google reads. Each product needs an ID, title, link, image, price, description and availability. Clothing needs more, such as colour, size and gender. Write titles the way buyers search, like "Women's cotton kurti, blue, size M", not an internal code. India also requires shipping settings or a shipping cost, so set that up before you submit. Use clear photos on a plain background, and keep stock status honest. A product marked in stock that is sold out wastes a click and costs you trust.
Fix common disapprovals
The most common trap is a price mismatch. Google compares the price in your feed with the price on your product page. If they differ, the product can be disapproved. A sale price you changed on your site but not in the feed causes this, and so does wrong structured data on the page. Fix the price at the source, then request a website check. Google re-crawls disapproved products over the next few hours or days.
Free listings vs Shopping ads
Free listings cost nothing per click, but you cannot buy a better spot. Shopping ads use the same product data, sit in paid positions, and charge only when someone clicks. To run them, link a Google Ads account to Merchant Center. Start free, see which products get clicks, then put a small ad budget behind the winners. The Storemate gives every product its own page and a description you control, and that page is what Google checks your feed against.
