Convert COD to prepaid with UPI incentives

Every COD order you move to prepaid roughly halves its return risk. Here's how to nudge buyers to pay by UPI — the right incentive, the right timing, and the message that works.

Why moving COD to prepaid is worth the effort

Every COD order you convert to prepaid roughly halves its return risk. Prepaid comes back under 2–3% of the time. COD often returns 25–30%. So converting even a fifth of your COD orders cuts returns and brings cash in sooner. You don't need to kill COD. You just need to make paying now the easier, better-value choice.

Offer a flat amount, not a percentage

Here's the counter-intuitive part. A flat "₹50 off if you pay now" beats an equal percentage discount. "₹50 off" feels concrete. "5% off" makes people do maths. Keep the incentive small and specific. On a ₹800 order, ₹40–₹50 is enough to move many buyers — and it's far cheaper than one return.

Time the nudge right

Ask at the moment of choice. The best place is checkout itself: show the prepaid price next to the COD price. The next best is right after a COD order, before dispatch. Send a short message with a UPI payment link and the small discount. The sooner you ask, the more you convert.

Make paying take five seconds

Friction kills conversion. Drop a UPI link straight into the message. The buyer taps, pays, and is done in about 30 seconds. Don't ask them to log in again or re-enter their address. Every extra step loses people who were willing to pay.

Say why prepaid is better for them, not you

Frame it around the buyer. Faster delivery. A small saving. No need to keep cash ready at the door. People convert when the reason serves them. They hesitate when it sounds like you're just dodging COD risk. Lead with their benefit and the discount does the rest.

Measure the conversion, not just the discount

Track what share of COD buyers take the prepaid offer. Watch it by product and city. If the incentive costs ₹50 and saves a ₹175 return, it pays for itself many times over. Adjust the amount until you find the point where conversion and margin both look right.

Automate the offer

Doing this by hand doesn't scale. On The Storemate you can create a small prepaid discount code and send it automatically after a COD order, using an order-placed email sequence with a UPI payment link the buyer can tap. Set it up once, watch the conversion, and let it run while you sell.
